Every five years the rateable values of all non-domestic properties in England and Wales are reassessed. The current revaluation came into effect on 1 April 2005. The basis of assessment for many schools and colleges has been reviewed and this has led to an increase in rateable value in most instances.

The ongoing management of the rating position for Schools and Colleges is important to ensure the assessments remain correct. There are also many opportunities to minimise the amount of rates paid to the local authority as properties are developed or their use is changed.

The Beattie Partnership offer a unique managed service to their clients which monitors the changes that take place and the impact this may have on their liability. This includes challenging the assessment placed on the property by the Valuation Office together with an ongoing audit of the various rates bills having regard to the changing circumstances at the School.
